TAKE A STAND with the Smith Center

Our first event that the Smith Center ever hosted was the 1st Annual Smith Center Memorial Walk in August of 2013. We gathered over 100 supporters and started a journey into activism that we will never forget! Now through triumphs and tragedy we bring to you our 3rd Annual Memorial Walk, however we upgraded our event into a weekend experience and renamed our walk in honor of a young lady by the name of Jeniel Smith who left us much too soon.
In 2014, Jeniel wrote “Take A Stand” a song dedicated to addressing the violence going on in the streets of Chicago and working for peace and action for our community. Sadly she passed away earlier this year in March and even though we never had a chance to collaborate on a community project, we decided to continue the “Take A Stand” mantra and add it to our annual event from this point forward in Jeniel’s honor and to take a more assertive stance in our mission to address the violence that is rampant in the community.
It is with this passion for action that we have created the “It Takes a Village Family Weekend“! This collaboration between the Smith Center and additional passionate and involved community individuals is focused on family unity and activism and we would love for you to join us. The events are FREE to the public!
Day #1 – Bobzilla Presents: Family Fun Day!
When: Saturday, August 22, 2015 / 11am – 8pm
Where: Calumet Woods Forest Preserve / 137th & Ashland
Featuring free food (while supplies last) and fun for the kids and families! Come on out and mix and mingle with other families and build a network of positive energy and support.
*Please bring your own chairs and blankets*
Day #2 – Take a Stand Memorial March
When: Sunday, August 23, 2015 / 1pm – 5pm (Gathering @ 1pm, March @2pm)
Where: 2100 E 87th Street (CVS HS – Starting point) – Total Distance 2 miles; multiple stops
A March through the community from one school to another in honor and memory of those who will not be able to anymore due to violence. This movement will be about demanding peace, activism and community empowerment.. all we need is YOU there!
